Work-Life Balance
When many people talk about work-life balance, they envision work on one
side of a see-saw and life on another. Employees are expected to check
their personal lives at the door and drop their individual concerns, worries,
and stress at the time clock.
Some employers seem to think that employees will magically do this just because it's company policy. The
most important aspect of the see-saw model is that from the employers perspective, work-life balance is
great as long as it does not interfere with work. (Why isn't it called, Life-Work Balance?)
Employees know, beyond any doubt, that the traditional model of work-life balance is absurd.
During my research, I found this incredible example of Work-Life balance from the past. It's worth a visit.

Consider a different piece of playground equipment. Most
people are not able to effectively separate and then balance
their personal lives and their work lives. They struggle to find
balance in all aspects of their lives. Just as they take stress
home from the job, they bring life along with them when
they come to work.
While employers are not responsible for the ways their
employees lead their lives, they certainly benefit from having
employees who are better at balancing all aspects of life.
Smart employers accept that their organization is part of the lives of their employees and they accept
the responsibility that goes with that role.
The relationship between productivity and employees who are experiencing various degrees of stress is
well-established in research. This loss in productivity is measurable against the potential ROI on
employer efforts to assist employees in their work-life balance efforts. Many organizations have found it
measurably profitable to offer work-life balance learning, skills development and direct services.
In the past, employees were able to comply with employer demands that today we would all find excess
and intolerable. They were dedicated to their companies even at the cost of their lives because they were
better at managing their work-life balance. These days, organizations are concerned with concepts like
employee engagement, attracting new talent, retention, succession planning and talent management.
Effective work-life balance practices directly impact all of these areas at the same time and most likely
represent the biggest potential for return on your investment.
